Spade bit, also referred to as paddle bits and flat bits, is a useful tool for rough boring in wood.
Many woodworkers choose it because it's inexpensive and can do tricks that few other bits can do.
Some carpenters grind spade bits to small diameters, fitting saw bolts to their recessed holes.
Some grind them to tapers and they can be converted into split nut drivers, for driving slotted threaded inserts.
Spade bits can also be used to enlarge undersized holes by fitting a pilot to the center lead.
Spade bits do like to burst through and mess up if you aren't careful.
